The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) collected K4 billion from Toll Gates in 2024 against a target of K2.7 billion.
The collections were disbursed for road projects and related activities across the country.
NRFA Public Relations Manager Alphonsius Hamachila said K795 million of the collections were paid through the Agency Electronic Card Payment system with 25% of this amount loaded through mobile telephone service platforms.
Speaking in Chipata ahead of the Ncwala Traditional Ceremony of the Ngoni speaking people to be held this Saturday, Mr. Hamachila has called on motorists travelling to Eastern Province to acquire Electronic Toll Cards and minimise the anticipated traffic congestion at the three Toll Gates on the Great East Road.
He said the Agency was operating three Toll Gates on the Great East Road in Chongwe, about 25 kilometers from Lusaka, Alexander Grey Zulu Toll Gate between Nyimba and Petauke, and the Reuben Chitandika Kamanga Toll Gate between Katete and Chipata have a combined traffic volume of 7000 vehicles per day.
Mr. Hamachila states that the Agency expects an upswing in traffic volumes on this stretch this week and says the Electronic Toll Cards which can be acquired from the Agency Head Quarters in Lusaka and at all toll gates across the country were a faster and efficient way of paying tolls.
He said NRFA has since partnered with the three mobile money providers to streamline the acquisition and loading of Electronic Toll Card value on the cards to ensure that motorists were not inconvenienced.
Mr. Hamachila urged motorists to observe traffic rules and avoid overspending as they approach toll facilities to avoid accidents.
